Die Ford Motor Company hat Pläne für den Bau eines Batteriewerks für Elektrofahrzeuge angekündigt. Die Gigafactory soll in Michigan entstehen und rund 3,5 Milliarden US-Dollar kosten. Gemeinsam mit CATL sollen in den USA Kunden für eine kostengünstigere Technologie gewonnen werden, die in China entwickelt wurde. CATL erteilt Ford dazu eine Lizenz zur Herstellung von Lithium-Eisen-Phosphat (LFP)-Batterien in Michigan und verspricht dem US-Automobilhersteller technische Unterstützung.
IRA als erklärter Anreiz
Der Bau von LFP-Batterien in Michigan ermöglicht es Ford indes, erhebliche Subventionen für die Batterieproduktion in den USA zu erhalten, die dem Unternehmen helfen könnten, das Ziel einer Gewinnspanne von acht Prozent für seine Elektrofahrzeuge bis 2026 zu erreichen. Die staatliche Förderung umfasst bis zu 45 Dollar pro Kilowattstunde und soll die Produktionskosten ausgleichen. Laut Ford-Vizepräsidentin Lisa Drake ist der „Inflation Reduction Act“ (IRA) für die Entscheidung des Konzerns, sein viertes Batteriewerk und die 2.500 Arbeitsplätze in Michigan anzusiedeln, „unglaublich wichtig“ gewesen.
Michigan investiert in Batterieproduktion
Der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters zufolge hatte der US-Bundesstaat Michigan über einen Zeitraum von 15 Jahren Anreize in Höhe von etwas mehr als einer Milliarde Dollar bewilligt, um das Projekt zu gewinnen. Dazu zählen Zuschüsse im Rahmen des „Critical Industry Program“ von bis zu 210 Millionen Dollar sowie 772 Millionen Dollar für die Ausweisung des Projekts als „Renaissance Zone“, die die Grundsteuer inklusive der persönlichen Grundsteuer erheblich senken soll.
