Nissan befindet sich in fortgeschrittenen Verhandlungen mit der britischen Regierung für den Aufbau einer Batterie-Gigafabrik. Sollten die Gespräche im Rahmen eines Post-Brexit-Plans erfolgreich verlaufen, würde Großbritannien zu Nissans größtem Elektroauto-Produktionszentrum inklusive Batteriezellfertigung außerhalb Japans.
Langfristig 20 Gigawattstunden
Vor Ort besteht bereits eine Batterieproduktionsanlage von 1,9 Gigawattstunden, die durch ein geplantes Update seine jährliche Leistung bis 2024 auf sechs Gigawattstunden ausbauen soll. Langfristig sei sogar eine Kapazität von 20 Gigawattstunden geplant. Nissan selbst hat dabei vitales Interesse an einer größeren Batteriefabrik in Nachbarschaft zu seinem Fahrzeugwerk. Für den Standort, an dem unter anderem der Nissan Leaf gebaut wird, befürchteten die Japaner im Rahmen des Brexits Unsicherheiten bei der Belieferung mit ausreichenden Batteriezellen aus dem europäischen Umfeld, heißt es.
Betreiber des britischen Batteriewerks wäre weiterhin das chinesische Unternehmen Envision AESC. Dieses hatte bereits 2018 Nissans Batterietochter AESC und die Produktionskapazitäten in Sunderland übernommen. Neben der Produktionsstätte in Großbritannien unterhält Envision AESC auch Anlagen in Japan und den USA.
