Der chinesische Batteriehersteller CATL plant, in Ungarn seine zweite europäische Fabrik zur Produktion von Lithium-Ionen-Akkus zu errichten. Mit einem angekündigten Jahresvolumen von 100 Gigawattstunden soll das Werk um einiges größer sein als der Standort bei Erfurt. Dort baut der Konzern momentan an einer Fabrik, in der jährlich acht Gigawattstunden an Batterien vom Band laufen sollen. Den ersten Spatenstich für die 7,3 Milliarden Euro schwere Investition möchte der Konzern noch Ende dieses Jahres setzen.

Investition folgt auf Nachfrage in Europa

Mit dem Standort Ungarn wolle CATL die Belieferung seiner europäischen Kunden vereinfachen. Als geplante Abnehmer listet der Konzern Hersteller wie Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Stellantis und Volkswagen auf. Auch der ungarische Außenminister Péter Szijjártó zeigt sich glücklich mit dem Projekt: Er stuft das Vorhaben, bei dem regenerative Enegie zum Einsatz kommen soll, als „bisher größte Greenfield-Investition in der Geschichte Ungarns“ ein.
