Der koreanische Batteriehersteller SK Innovation (SKI) will eigenen Angaben zufolge mehr als eine Milliarde US-Dollar für ein neues Batteriewerk in China aufbringen. Die Investition steht offensichtlich in direkter Verbindung mit dem im vergangenen Juli vorgestellten Ziel, bis zum Jahr 2025 eine Produktionskapazität von 200 Gigawattstunden zu erreichen.
Blick nach China und Pläne für Europa
Durch den Ausbau ihrer Kapazitäten antworten Batteriehersteller weltweit auf die wachsende Nachfrage an Batteriezellen für unterschiedliche elektrische Anwendungen. Zu den Kunden von SKI zählen etwa Ford und Volkswagen sowie der ebenfalls koreanische Automobilhersteller Hyundai Motor, zu dem auch die Marke KIA gehört. Die Entscheidung von SKI, eine Batteriezellproduktion in China zu errichten, legt nahe, dass das Unternehmen dort neben aktuell auch in Europa geplanten Kapazitäten ein erhebliches Verkaufspotenzial für seine Produkte sieht.
500 Gigawattstunden jährlich angepeilt
Um die eigene Batteriesparte voranzutreiben, hatten die Koreaner vor einem Monat angekündigt, das Geschäft auszugliedern und es mit dem vorläufigen Namen „SK Battery“ am 1. Oktober 2021 eigenständig an den Start gehen zu lassen. Insgesamt verfügt SKI heute über Werke in Südkorea, China, den USA und Ungarn, die zusammengenommen eine Produktionsleistung von 40 Gigawattstunden erreichen. Der weltweit aktuell sechstgrößte Batterieproduzent will bis 2030 über das Zwischenziel von 200 Gigawattstunden im Jahr 2025 auf abschließend 500 Gigawattstunden jährlicher Produktionsleistung kommen.
