Der chinesische Batteriehersteller CATL hat gemeinsam mit der Stadtregierung von Shanghai einen Rahmenvertrag für den Bau einer Gigafactory unterzeichnet. Das Werk soll in direkter Nähe zum dortigen Tesla-Standort entstehen. Damit bestätigte das Unternehmen entsprechende zuvor bekannt gewordene Gerüchte.

Kapazität von 80 Gigawattstunden unbestätigt
Inwiefern die Gigafactory von CATL das bereits im Juni gerüchteweise verbreitete Volumen von 80 Gigawattstunden erfüllen wird, ist derzeit ebenso unklar wie der Zeitplan bis zum Auftakt der Produktion. Beabsichtigt sei der Bau eines Werks nach höchstem Stand der Technik in unmittelbarer Nähe zu Teslas Gigafactory 3.

Direkte Zulieferung für Tesla wohl nur noch Formsache
Bislang wurde auch noch nicht offiziell bestätigt, dass die Batteriezellen aus dem Werk für Teslas Fahrzeugproduktion genutzt werden sollen. Unabhängig vom aktuellen Bauvorhaben hatte CATL sich in den vergangenen Jahren allerdings zu einem wichtigen Batteriezellzulieferer für Tesla entwickelt. So liefert CATL derzeit bereits seine LFP-Zellen an den US-amerikanischen Elektroautobauer, der diese in der Standard-Range-Versionen des „Model 3“ und im „Model Y“ nutzt.
