VW-Partner QuantumScape prüft derzeit offenbar eine Produktion von Festkörperbatterien in Salzgitter. Laut einer gemeinsamen Vereinbarung, die QuantumScape bei Twitter vorstellte, soll der Standort für eine Pilotanlage zur künftigen Herstellung von JV-Festkörperzellen noch 2021 gefunden werden.
„Dieses Joint Venture bringt unsere Kerntechnologie für Batterien mit Volkswagens tiefem Verständnis für hochvolumige und hochwertige Produktion zusammen und maximiert unsere Fähigkeit, diese Technologie in die industrielle Fertigung zu bringen“, heißt es in einer Mitteilung der Geschäftsführung von QuantumScape.
Produktion: Von einer auf 20 Gigawattstunden pro Jahr
Der erste gemeinsame Standort der beiden Projektpartner soll eine Kapazität von einer Gigawattstunde an Festkörperbatterien pro Jahr umfassen. Die Entscheidung, ob die Anlage in Salzgitter entsteht, soll spätestens zum vierten Quartal fallen. Eine Produktion in der niedersächsischen Großstadt sei nur dann realistisch, wenn diese durch entsprechende Fördermittel des Bundes unterstützt werde, betonte ein VW-Sprecher auf Anfrage der „Zeit“. Unabhängig von der Entscheidung planen die Partner bereits, am Standort der Pilotanlage küntig eine Produktion von 20 Gigawattstunden pro Jahr auf den Weg zu bringen.
VW will Tesla die Stirn bieten
Volkswagen baut in seiner aktuellen Strategie zur Elektrifizierung der eigenen Fahrzeugflotte auf innovative Technologien. Dazu zählt die Festkörperbatterie. Nachdem die Wolfsburger schon 2020 rund 200 Millionen US-Dollar in das Unternehmen QuantumScape investiert hatten, gab es vor kurzem weitere 100 Millionen Dollar. Mit der momentanen Entwicklung der Batterietechnik und entsprechender Produktionskapazitäten plant VW, den Markt der Elektromobilität in großen Teilen vom derzeit dominierenden Tesla zurückzugewinnen.
