Cuberg, die Advanced Technology Group vom Zellhersteller Northvolt, hat in einem Test durch eine externe Prüfstelle die Ergebnisse ihrer Entwicklingsbemühungen im Feld der Lithium-Metall-Zellarchitektur validieren lassen.

Verbesserungen an der Schwachstelle von Lithium-Metall-Batterien

Lithium-Metall-Batterien (LiM) weichen in ihrer Zellchemie von den in vielen Produkten schon heute verbauten Lithium-Ionen-Zellen ab. Dadurch lassen sich teils weitaus höhere Energiedichten erreichen, jedoch nimmt die Kapazität mit zunehmendem Zellalter durch Ladezyklen schneller ab als bei der etablierten Konkurrenzchemie. Cuberg konnte nun eine Zellentwicklung demonstrieren, die erst nach 672 Zyklen die Kapazitätsgrenze von 80% ihrer Performance im Neuzustand erreicht. Die Test wurden dabei bedeutender Weise unter alltagsnahen Bedingungen und bei Umgebungstemperatur durchgeführt.

Die getesteten Zellen weisen eine Anfangskapazität von 380 Wattstunden pro Kilogramm auf und bedeuten damit einen Fortschritt um 40% im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Lithium-Ionen-Zellen.

Durch diese höheren Energiedichten werden neue Einsatzszenarien erschlossen, Ziel vom Batterieentwickler ist es, die Elektrisierung des Flugverkehrs zu ermöglichen.

Trotz der bedeutenden Verbesserungen soll die Technologie mit dem aktuellen Produktionsprozess für Li-Ionen-Zellen kompatibel sein. Somit sei es perspektivisch möglich, entsprechend veränderte Komponenten als “Drop-In” in bestehende Produktionsanlagen einzubinden.
