Das britisch-koreanisches Batterieunternehmen Eurocell plant eine Gigafactory für Lithium-Ionen-Batterien in Westeuropa zu errichten. Die ersten serienreifen Zellen sollen dabei schon im kommenden Jahr vom Band laufen. Zur Realisierung dieses Projektes habe Eurocell eine Investitionszusage von 600 Millionen Pfund, umgerechnet circa 715 Millionen Euro, erhalten.

Genaue Standortwahl noch ausstehend

Über die exakte Standortwahl hält sich Eurocell zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch bedeckt. Der Zellhersteller plant das Batteriewerk entweder im Vereinigten Königreich, in den Niederlanden oder in Spanien zu errichten. Laut Eurocell hänge die finale Entscheidung stark davon ab, ob die Regierung das richtige Maß an Unterstützung und Investitionen gewähre.

Volle Produktionsleistung ab 2025

Eurocell plane in einer ersten Phase bereits ab Anfang 2023 mit der Herstellung von Lithium-Ionen-Zellen im großen Maßstab für bestehende Kunden. Gleichzeitig werde in der zweiten Phase eine maßgeschneiderte Anlage errichtet, welche ab dem Jahr 2025 mehr als 40 Millionen Zellen pro Jahr produzieren könne. Genauere Angaben bezüglich der Produktionsleistung wurden von Eurocell nicht kommuniziert.

Temperaturrobuste Zellen

Die in Südkorea entwickelten Zellen weisen laut Eurocell beträchtliche Vorteile im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Lithium-Ionen Zellen auf. Laut dem Batteriehersteller haben die Zellen eine mehr als zehnmal längere Lebensdauer und seien außerdem über einen großen Betriebstemperaturbereich einsetzbar. Somit würden sich die Zellen besonders für Elektrofahrzeuge sowie stationäre Speicher in extremen Klima- und Wetterbedingungen eignen.
