Redwood Materials will in den USA eine Produktionsstätte für neue Batterie-Materialien errichten. Das Werk soll zunächst auf eine jährliche Kapazität von 100 Gigawattstunden kommen. Bislang waren die Pläne des von Tesla-Mitgründer JB Straubel ins Leben gerufenen Unternehmens auf das Recycling von Fahrzeugbatterien beschränkt.
Abbau, Aufbereitung und Verarbeitung in den USA
Wie alle Recycling-Betriebe, sieht auch Redwood Materials sich damit konfrontiert, dass es aktuell noch nicht genug Altbatterien gibt. In der Zwischenzeit will das US-Unternehmen Rohstoffe selbst abbauen und zu neuem Batterie-Material weiterverarbeiten. Konkret beabsichtige Redwood Materials, die Elektrodenfolien für die Anoden und Kathoden der Batterien zu produzieren. Das Unternehmen erklärte, dass die Rohstoffe in Übersee abgebaut, aufbereitet und anschließend im geplanten US-Werk zu Batteriezellen verarbeitet würden.
Ausbau auf 500 Gigawattstunden bis 2030 geplant
Kurzfristig müsse die Elektroauto-Produktion beschleunigt werden, damit in Zukunft Altbatterien zur Wiederverwertung verfügbar seien. Langfristig wolle Redwood Materials so viel Recycling-Ware wie möglich verwenden und den Rest aus nachhaltig abgebauten Ressourcen auffüllen. Dazu sei eine konstante Steigerung des Recycling-Anteils anzustreben. Bis zum Jahr 2025 will das Unternehmen in Nordamerika eine Produktionsstätte für Batterie-Material mit einer jährlichen Kapazität von 100 Gigawattstunden errichten. Bis 2030 plant Redwood Materials einen Ausbau, um Batterie-Material mit einer Kapazität von 500 Gigawattstunden pro Jahr zu produzieren.
