Das australische Unternehmen Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG) hat eine Graphen-Aluminium-Ionen-Batterie vorgestellt, die 60-mal schneller als aktuelle Lithium-Ionen-Batterien laden soll. Erste Zellen für den Einsatz in Elektro-Fahrzeugen sollen bereits ab 2024 verfügbar sein. Laut aktuellen Meldungen sollen die Batterien eine Energiedichte von 150 bis 160 Wattstunden pro Kilogramm erreichen.
Mehr Leistung, besseres Recycling, keine Kühlung
Erste Zellen, die zunächst als Knopfzellen hergestellt werden sollen, würden somit das Dreifache an Energie im Vergleich zu allen bisher bekannten Aluminium-Batterien speichern. Ebenfalls dreimal länger soll die Lebensdauer der Zellen sein: Bis zu 3.000 Zyklen seien möglich. Die Graphen-Aluminium-Ionen-Batterien sollen neben den guten Leistungsdaten außerdem einfacher zu recyceln sein. Test hätten zuletzt außerdem ergeben, dass keinerlei Temperaturprobleme entstehen würden. Craig Nicol, Managing Director von GMG, stellt deswegen sogar in Aussicht, dass Batteriepacks auf Basis der Zellen ohne Kühlsystem auskommen könnten.
University of Queensland steuert spezielles Verfahren bei
Teil der vorgestellten Entwicklung ist eine Kooperation von GMG mit dem „Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology“ der University of Queensland. Die Universität unterstützte den Aufbau der Zellen mit einem Verfahren zur Einbringung von Aluminium-Atomen in mikroskopische Perforationen der Graphen-Ebenen der Batterie. Dies stelle einen erheblichen Unterschied zur bisherigen Vorgehensweise bei Aluminium-Ionen-Batterien dar.
