Lithium gilt aktuell als das mit Abstand wichtigste metallische Element für die moderne Lithium-Ionen-Batterie. Bislang stammt der Rohstoff vor allem aus Australien und dem sogenannten Lithium-Dreieck in Südamerika, wo das Element mit in der Kritik stehenden Abbaubedingungen und weiter Anreise zum europäischen Markt gewonnen wird. Demnächst soll Lithium jedoch aus dem Rhein kommen.

Zuerst „nur“ 15.000 Tonnen Lithiumhydroxid pro Jahr
Grundlage dafür bildet eine von Vulcan Energy bereits seit geraumer Zeit mehrfach vorgestellte Technologie, mit der Lithium aus dem Oberrheingraben gewonnen werden soll. Dabei profitiert das Unternehmen von Lithium als Nebenprodukt von Geothermie-Anlagen, die zur Wärme- und Stromerzeugung genutzt werden. Lithiumhydroxid wird dafür aus dem Thermalwasser extrahiert, bevor es wieder in die Erde gelangt. Für die Zeit bis 2024 plant das Unternehmen, pro Jahr 15.000 Tonnen Lithiumhydroxid zu fördern. Langfristig sollen es sogar 40.000 Tonnen jährlich sein. Zum Vergleich: 20.000 Tonnen produzierte Chile als zweigrößter Lithiumhersteller der Welt insgesamt im Jahr 2020.

Zum Produktionsstart ab 2024 soll dann plangemäß direkt ein Drittel der geförderten Menge an LG Energy Solution geliefert werden. Das Unternehmen beabsichtigt demzufolge, rund 5.000 Tonnen des Rohstoffs abzunehmen. Später will LG bis zu 10.000 Tonnen pro Jahr von Vulcan Energy beziehen.

GM und CTR starten vergleichbares Vorhaben
Ein vergleichbares Projekt planen aktuell auch GM und Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR) in Nordamerika. Dabei will CTR durch ein ähnliches Verfahren jährlich etwa 20.000 Tonnen Lithium aus Salton Sea im kalifornischen Imperial Valley an GM liefern.
