Die beiden schwedischen Unternehmen Volvo und Northvolt beabsichtigen die Gründung eines Joint Ventures zur Entwicklung und Produktion nachhaltiger Batterien. Kern der 50:50-Partnerschaft soll eine Batteriezellfabrik mit einem Volumen von 50 Gigawattstunden pro Jahr sein. Vorab soll jedoch ein Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrum errichtet werden.
Mit der F&E-Einrichtung, die im Jahr 2022 den Betrieb aufnehmen soll, und der für 2026 geplanten Batteriezellfertigung treiben Volvo und Northvolt ihre Kompetenzen zur Batteriefertigung gemeinsam voran. Profitieren sollen davon in erster Linie die Fahrzeuge von Volvo und der rein elektrischen Marke Polestar. Beide Automarken sollen mit Blick auf Reichweite und Ladezeiten ideal zugeschnittene Batterien aus dem Joint Venture erhalten.
Produktionsprozess soll klimafreundlicher werden
Bei der Herstellung der künftigen Batteriezellen und -systeme soll ein besonderer Fokus auf der Nachhaltigkeit liegen. Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen Northvolt und Volvo soll daher auch zum Ziel haben, den bisher noch sehr kohlenstoffemissionsintensiven Produktionsprozess deutlich zu optimieren. Sol sollen etwa sämtliche elektrische Anlagen in der Fabrik mit regeneratriver Energie versorgt werden.
Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Northvolt sei nicht nur die Versorgung mit hochwertigen, nachhaltigeren Batteriezellen gesichert, sondern es würden auch die eigenen Entwicklungskapazitäten und das industrielle Netzwerk gestärkt, betont Håkan Samuelsson, Vorstandsvorsitzender der Volvo Car Group. Ziel sei es, bis zum Jahr 2030 die Marke vollständig zu elektrifizieren.
