Ein weiteres Unternehmen kündigt in einer aktuellen Vielzahl von Meldungen zur Festkörperbatterietechnik eine eigene Entwicklung im Themenbereich an. Das aktuell noch weitgehend unbekannte Unternehmen Oxis Energy mixt die Ansätze der Lithium-Schwefel-Batterie mit der einer Festköperbatterie. Ergebnis ist eine Festköper-Lithium-Schwefelbatterie, die schon zum Herbst 2021 Kunden bereitgestellt werden soll.

Die erste quasi Festköper-Li-S-Batterie soll bis zum Sommer 2022 einen auslieferungsfähigen Zustand erreicht haben und Leistungsdaten von 450 Wh/kg bei 550 Wh/L zeigen. Ab dem Jahr 2023 sollen die Leistungsdaten dann bereits auf 550 Wh/kg und 700 Wh/L ansteigen und ab dem Jahr 2026 bei 600 Wh/kg und 900 Wh/L liegen.

Einsatzgebiet der Batteriezellen sollen leistungsintensive und ebenso sicherheitskritische Bereiche werden. Die Zellen seien beispielsweise für den Einsatz in Flugzeugen qualifiziert. So äußerte sich Huw Hampson Jones, CEO von Oxis Energy, zur aktuellen Entwicklung: „Mit sofortiger Wirkung wurden die bestehenden Kunden darüber informiert, dass alle neuen Programme die OXIS Solid-State Li-S Zellentechnologie verwenden werden. Aufgrund unseres Kundenstamms in den USA wissen wir, dass die Flugzeughersteller den Wechsel von konventionellen zu Solid-State Li-S begrüßen. Die OXIS Li-S-Zellentechnologie ist von Natur aus sicherer als Li-Ion, da Schwefel als Passivierung des Lithium-Metalls wirkt. OXIS hat Mechanismen perfektioniert, mit denen ein höheres Maß an Sicherheit und Langlebigkeit erreicht wird, während wir uns auf die Markteinführung von Quasi Solid-State Li-S in den Jahren 2021/2022 zubewegen. Im Jahr 2020 hat OXIS erfolgreich ein vollelektrisches US-Flugzeug angetrieben und damit die Anforderungen des Kunden und der Federal Aviation Authority erfüllt.“
