Zusammen mit seiner Tochtergesellschaft Shenzhen Dynanonic plant CATL den Bau eines neuen Lithium-Eisenphosphat (LFP) Kathodenmaterial-Werks in Sichuan, China. Das Investment von $280 Millionen unterstreicht dabei die Bedeutung die CATL der LFP-Batteriezelle zuschreibt. Das gesamte Bauvorhaben soll in drei Jahren fertiggestellt sein.

CATL scheint von der LFP-Batteriezelle überzeugt zu sein, was sich mit Blick auf die Absatzzahlen der Batterietechnologien im Jahr 2020 weiterführend begründen lässt. Nach aktuellen Angaben hatte die LFP-Zelle im Jahr 2020 einen weltweiten Marktanteil von 20%, in China sogar 21%. Bis zum Jahr 2021 wird erwartet, dass der Anteil der LFP-Zelle weltweit bereits auf 25% anwachsen sein wird.

Festzuhalten ist, dass aktuelle LFP-Zellen in Fahrzeugen leistungstechnisch den NMC-Batteriezellen (noch) unterlegen sind. Insbesondere in der prominentesten Endanwendung dem chinesischem Model 3 von Tesla, wo die Zellen seit Ende letzten Jahres verbaut werden, haben die Zellen vor allem bei kalten Temperaturen, nach mehreren Berichten, erhebliche Schwächen, zum Beispiel beim Ladevorgang, offenbart.

Vorteile der LFP-Zelle gibt es jedoch auch einige. Vielleicht am wesentlichsten ist, dass die Zellen als sehr sicher gelten. Ein thermisches durchgehen, wie es von NMC-Zellen bekannt ist, ist bei den LFP-Zellen nahezu ausgeschlossen. Weiterhin zeigt sich eine hohe Zyklenfestigkeit und vor allem ein positiv zu vermerkender kompletter Verzicht auf Kobalt und Nickel, die als Basisbestanteile der NMC-Technologie teuer sind und auch, hauptsächlich beim Kobalt, wegen oftmals fragwürdigen Abbaubedingungen in Verruf stehen.
