Wie sieht die Zukunft der Batterieproduktion aus? Diese Frage hat sich der VDMA in seiner Roadmap Batterieproduktionsmittel 2030 gestellt. Gemeinsam mit den Mitgliedern VDMA Batterieproduktion, dem Fraunhofer ISI, dem PEM der RWTH Aachen und der Battery LabFactory Braunschweig wurden die zukünftigen Trends in der Batterieproduktion herausgearbeitet sowie deren Maschinen und anlagenseitige Umsetzung erörtert.
Die im Jahr 2020 aktualisierte Roadmap wurde erstmalig in dieser Form im Jahr 2014 vom VDMA vorgestellt und basiert auf einem zielorientierten Dialog zwischen Batterieproduzenten, Produktions-forschung und dem Maschinen- und Anlagenbau sowie der Einbeziehung ausländischer Kompetenzträger. Um, nach Aussage des VDMA, insbesondere der Geschwindigkeit auf dem Markt gerecht zu werden, wird die Roadmap alle zwei Jahre neu veröffentlicht.
Ein Inhalt der Roadmap ist, als fester Bestand der Marktbetrachtungen seit 2016, eine Bewertung von Fabrikkapazitäten und deren Angebotspotenzial im weltweiten Maßstab. Dabei sei in den letzten Jahren insbesondere Europa und der Standort Deutschland in den Fokus gerückt, aufgrund der großen Nähe zur Automobilindustrie als Endkunden. Neben Europa sei jedoch nach wie vor China der wichtigste Absatzmarkt. Der chinesische Maschinen- und Anlagenbau hat sich aus dem starken Heimatmarkt heraus zur Weltspitze entwickelt.
