Der amerikanische Autobauer GM plant mit aller Macht in Zukunft die aktuelle Dominanz von Tesla auf dem Markt der batterieelektrischen Fahrzeuge zu brechen. Dafür hat sich GM bereits Partnerschaften mit LG Chem und Honda Motors gesichert und sucht nun vor allem das innovative Wissen von Start-Ups.
Doug Parks, GMs Executive Vice President of Global Product Development beschreibt das so: „Wir arbeiten mit einigen großartigen Unternehmen zusammen, […] schauen aber auch nach Start-Ups um an der Spitze der Lernkurve zu stehen.“
GM verfolgt die Elektromobilität in ähnlich Dimensionen, wie das beispielsweise VW tut, auch wenn zumindest nach den offiziellen Ankündigungen VWs Ausgaben noch etwas höher als die von GM liegen. Konkret haben die Amerikaner 27 Milliarden Dollar für Projekte und Entwicklungen im Rahmen der Elektromobilität eingeplant. Alleine die im Jahr 2020 verkündete Budgeterhöhung von 20 auf 27 Milliarden Dollar stünde im engen Zusammenhang mit dem GM eigenen Batterieprojekt Ultium-Battery.
Tatsächlich scheint Tesla aktuell jedoch sehr dominant, sodass es offen bleibt wie schnell andere Automobilhersteller, inklusive GM, die Dominanz brechen können. Knapp 500.000 elektrische Fahrzeuge verkaufte Tesla im Jahr 2020 und hat sich mit weitem Abstand zur wertvollsten Fahrzeugmarke der Welt entwickelt. Tesla ist heute mit einem Marktwert von 600 Milliarden Dollar mehr als 10-mal so viel Wert wie GM.
