Gemeinsam mit der BAIC-Tochter Beijing Electric Vehicle (BJEV) will die Daimler-Tochter Mercedes-Benz-Energy Second-Life Batterien entwickeln. BJEV ist mit bereits mehr als 420.000 batterieelektrischen Fahrzeugen auf dem Markt einer der führenden Hersteller von reinen Elektrofahrzeugen in China und sieht sich als Experte auf Gebieten wie der Ladeinfrastruktur, Batterietauschinfrastruktur sowie der 2nd-Life-Nutzung von Batteriesystemen. In China sollen jetzt zusammen mit Mercedes-Benz-Energy bereits genutzte Batterien von BJEV aus Elektrofahrzeugen verwertet werden. Damit soll die Nachhaltigkeit von Batterien gesteigert und wichtige Rohstoffe zurückzugewonnen werden. Im Fokus der entwickelten Batteriesysteme steht die Anwendung als stationärer Speicher. Laut CEO von Mercedes-Benz-Energy werde die Nachfrage durch den verstärkten Einsatz regenerativer Energien und die damit eihergehenden schwankende und dezentrale Energieerzeugung ansteigen. Nach eigenen Angaben seien bereits drei Großspeicher mit anderen Partnern mit insgesamt 40 MWh Energie installiert und mit dem deutschen Energienetz verbunden.
