Den australischen Kontinent ausschließlich mit Sonnenenergie mit einem Straßenfahrzeug zu durchqueren ist das erklärte Ziel des Team Sonnenwagen Aachen. Sie treten im Oktober mit dem Covestro Sonnenwagen bei der World Solar Challenge in Australien gegen über 30 internationale Teams an. Beim härtesten Solarrennen der Welt legen sie dabei 3000 km auf dem Stuart Highway durch das australische Outback zurück.

Zum Zwischenspeichern der durch Solarzellen gewonnenen Sonnenenergie hat das Fahrzeug dabei auch eine Batterie an Bord. Reglementiert auf ein Zellgewicht von 20 kg hat das Team eine 5 kWh-Batterie ausgelegt, konstruiert und in Handarbeit gefertigt. Die Batterie besteht aus einem einzigen Modul mit insgesamt 420 Rundzellen und ist damit in der Lage, genug Energie für eine batterieelektrische Reichweite von 500 km bei einer Fahrtgeschwindigkeit von 90 km/h bereit zu stellen.
