Das VW-Batterie-Unternehmen PowerCo SE hat Pläne zum Bau seiner größten Gigafactory im kanadischen Ontario bekanntgegeben. Mit einer geplanten Investition von 4,8 Milliarden Euro bis 2030 soll die Anlage in St. Thomas bei vollem Ausbau über eine jährliche Produktionskapazität von 90 Gigawattstunden verfügen. Der erste Spatenstich ist für 2024 und der Produktionsbeginn für 2027 vorgesehen.

Standort im „Great Lakes Automotive Corridor“

Die Zellfabrik befindet sich rund 30 Kilometer südlich des kandischen London im Zentrum des „Great Lakes Automotive Corridor“. Die strategische Lage biete die Nähe zu Großstädten wie Toronto in Kanada und Detroit in den USA und ermögliche den Zugang zu einem regionalen Forschungs- und Innovations-Cluster sowie qualifizierten Arbeitskräften, einer effizienten Verkehrsinfrastruktur und etablierten Lieferketten.

Batteriezellen für Elektrofahrzeuge in den USA

Die Satdt St. Thomas soll damit die erste Gigafactory von PowerCo in Übersee beherbergen. Die in der Anlage produzierten Zellen sollen in den batteriebetriebenen Elektrofahrzeugen der Gruppe in Nordamerika verbaut werden. Seit der Gründung im Juli 2022 hat PowerCo SE nun drei Zellproduktionsstandorte ausgewählt: Salzgitter, Valencia und St. Thomas. Bis 2030 wollen PowerCo und die Partner des Unternehmens einen Jahresumsatz von mehr als 20 Milliarden Euro erwirtschaften.
