Der Volkswagen Konzern wird eine Gigafabrik im kanadischen St. Thomas in Ontario errichten.
Die Zellfabrik soll ab 2027 die Einheitszellen von Volkswagen produzieren. Nach Salzgitter und Valencia wird es die dritte Gigafabrik des Konzerns auf der Welt und die erste Zellfabrik der PowerCo in Nordamerika.
Ideale Voraussetzungen für das erste Batteriewerk der PowerCo außerhalb Europas
Die Entscheidung für den Standort im kanadischen St. Thomas wurde aufgrund der Versorgung mir lokalen Rohstoffen und dem Zugang zu Grünstrom getroffen, heißt es in der Pressemeldung des Konzerns. Weitere Einzelheiten zur Gigafabrik sollen in naher Zukunft kommuniziert werden.
Europäischen Pläne bleiben unverändert
Die Ausbauplän für Europa sind unabhängig von der Entscheidung für Kanada. PowerCo wird am Plan festhalten, Zellfabriken aufzubauen, um die Nachfrage von etwa 240 Gigawattstunden zu decken, kommuniziert Thomas Schmall, Mitglied des Vorstands der Volkswagen AG, Geschäftsbereich Technik, und Vorsitzender des Aufsichtsrats der PowerCo SE.
