BMW plant laut einem Medienbericht den Bau eines großen Montagewerks für Hochvoltbatterien im niederbayerischen Irlbach. Von dort aus sollen alle Standorte im bayerischen Umland mit Akku-Packs beliefert werden. Im nahegelegenen Wackersdorf will BMW zudem ein Batterie-Testzentrum entstehen lassen. Ab 2025 sollen dort umfangreiche Tests an Speichern, Batteriemodulen und Elektrofahrzeugen vorgenommen werden.

Verhandlungen über 160-Hektar-Areal

Um den geplanten Serienbetrieb des neuen Montagewerks im Jahr 2026 aufnehmen zu können, müssen die Bauarbeiten Anfang 2024 beginnen, heißt es. Es werde erwartet, dass am neuen Standort Rundzellen für Elektrofahrzeuge der „Neuen Klasse“ zu Packs montiert werden. Dem Medienbericht zufolge wird in Irlbach über eine Gesamtfläche von 160 Hektar verhandelt. Armin Soller, Bürgermeister der 1.200-Einwohner-Gemeinde, bestätigte gegenüber der Süddeutschen Zeitung, dass Verhandlungen im Gange seien, aber noch keine Vereinbarung getroffen worden sei.

Prüfstände in bestehende Werksstrukturen

Für das geplante Batterie-Testzentrum werde BMW indes noch im Herbst 2023 die dafür benötigten Prüfstände in bestehende Strukturen des Werks einbauen. Mit der neuen Einrichtung würde BMW die Gemeinde Wackersdorf erstmals zu einem Entwicklungsstandort machen.
