Das deutsch-kanadische Unternehmen „Rock Tech Lithium“ hat eine Genehmigung für den vorzeitigen Baubeginn seines Lithium-Konverters im brandenburgischen Guben erhalten. Rock Tech plant eigenen Angaben zufolge, in den kommenden Wochen mit den ersten Arbeiten an dem rund 683 Millionen US-Dollar teuren Projekt auf dem eigenen Areal im Gubener Industriegebiet zu starten. Im Februar 2022 hatte Rock Tech die erste Teilgenehmigung und die Genehmigung zum vorzeitigen Baubeginn beantragt.
Inbetriebnahme im Jahr 2025
Die Konverter-Anlage soll nach der Fertigstellung die erste ihrer Art in Europa sein. Ab 2025 möchte Rock Tech in Guben rund 24.000 Tonnen batteriefähiges Lithiumhydroxid produzieren. Als primäre Quelle für das benötigte Rohmaterial nennt das Unternehmen sein eigenes Mineralienprojekt in Kanada, schließt aber auch zugekauftes Material aus „verantwortungsvoll produzierenden Minen“ nicht aus. Auch Material aus dem Batterie-Recycling soll in naher Zukunft genutzt werden.
