Der chinesische Batteriehersteller EVE soll BMW künftig mit großformatigen, zylindrischen Lithiumzellen versorgen. Das geht aus einem Bericht der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters hervor. Im vergangenen Mai hatte BMW bereits bekanntgegeben, ab 2025 mit zylindrischen Zellen von CATL beliefert zu werden. Über das Zellformat oder eventuelle Liefermengen wurden indes keine Angaben gemacht. In seinen Elektrofahrzeugen verbaut der BMW-Konzern derzeit prismatische Batteriezellen.

Vorteile bei Energiedichte und Produktionskosten

Mit einem Wechsel auf zylindrische Zellen im Großformat würde BMW dem US-amerikanischen Automobilhersteller Tesla folgen. Dort hatte man schon im September 2020 verkündet, Zellen in 4680er-Größe produzieren und verbauen zu wollen. Das Format verspricht im Vergleich mit seinem rechteckigen Gegenstück Vorteile in der Energiedichte. Hersteller versprechen sich außerdem niedrigere Produktionskosten.
