Der schwedische Batterieentwickler Northvolt möchte die Plausibilität vom Einsatz biobasierten Kohlenstoff untersuchen. Dazu schließt sich der Konzern mit dem finnischen Stora Enso, einem Forstunternehmen und Verpackungsmittelhersteller zusammen.

Einsatz eines Abfallprodukts der Papierherstellung

In der Partnerschaft geht es um das von Stora Enso entwickelte Lignode, einem Hartkohlenstoff, der auf dem nachwachsenden Rohstoff Lignin beruht. Bäume bestehen zu ca. 20-30% aus Lignin, in der Zellulosefaserproduktion fällt es als Nebenprodukt ab und wird bisher oftmals zur Energiegewinnung verbrannt.

Nach der Umwandlung zum feinen Kohlenstoffpulver kann es allerdings als Anodenmaterial in Lithiumbatterien eingesetzt werden. In einer Machbarkeitsstudie evaluiert Stora Enso aktuell die industrielle Produktion des biobasierten Kohlenstoffs.

Die Nutzung von lokal gewonnenen Lignin in Form von Lignode senken die Abhängigkeit von importiertem Rohmaterial und soll somit Kosten verringern und die CO2-Bilanz verbessern. Ziel der Partnerschaft ist die Entwicklung von Batteriezellen, die ausschließlich mit Anodenmaterial aus Europa herzustellen ist.
