Das US-amerikanische Unternehmen „Natron Energy“ hat den Start der Massenproduktion seiner Natrium-Ionen-Batterien für 2023 angekündigt. Die auf Natrium und „Preußisch Blau“ basierenden Zellen sollen in einem Werk von „Clarios International“ in Michigan hergestellt werden. Mögliche Kapazitäten ließ das Unternehmen mit Sitz in Kalifornien noch offen.

Vorhandene Technik soll Zeit und Kosten sparen

Bei der Produktionsstätte des Partners von „Natron Energy“ handelt es sich um ein Werk zur Herstellung von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien. Da für deren Fertigung keine besonderen Anlagen benötigt würden, rechne das Unternehmen mit einem schnelleren Markteintritt und Kostenersparnissen durch die Nutzung vorhandener Infrastruktur. Die breite Verfügbarkeit der benötigten Materialien soll zu besonders stabilen Preisen führen. Dies erweise sich wiederum als entscheidender Vorteil gegenüber Lithium – in Abhängigkeit davon, wie sich das Angebot und die Geopolitik in den kommenden Jahrzehnten entwickeln.

Neue Zellchemie mit mehreren Vorteilen

Laut „Natron Energy“ bietet das eigene Zelldesign eine starke volumetrische Leistungsdichte, die zwischen derjenigen von Blei-Säure und Lithium-Ionen liegt, ein Schnellladen auf 99 Prozent in nur acht Minuten ermöglicht und eine Lebensdauer von über 50.000 Zyklen aufweist. Das US-Unternehmen gehe davon aus, dass die Energiedichte – gemessen an Gewicht und Volumen – relativ gering ist, weshalb sich das Produkt nicht an Hersteller von Elektrofahrzeugen richte, sondern für industrielle Anwendungen geeeignet sei. Als potenzielle Schnittstelle zur E-Mobilität nennt „Natron Energy“ etwa den Einsatz in entsprechenden Ladestationen als Pufferspeicher, die Energie zwischen der langsamen Netzversorgung und den Schnellladegeräten speichern, um auf diese Weise ein Schnellladen trotz dürftiger Netzanbindung zu ermöglichen.
