General Motors (GM) und Samsung SDI wollen in den USA umgerechnet mehr als drei Milliarden Euro in den Bau eines neuen Werks zur Herstellung von Batteriezellen investieren. Die Produktionsstätte soll 2026 in Betrieb gehen und eine Kapazität von mehr als 30 Gigawattstunden aufweisen. Damit erhöht GM seine Produktionskapazitäten in den USA bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts auf rund 160 Gigawattstunden.
Prismatische und zylindrische Zellen
Die Unternehmen planen, das Werk gemeinsam zu betreiben, das über Produktionslinien für nickelhaltige prismatische und zylindrische Zellen verfügen soll. GM und Samsung SDI machen derzeit zwar keine Angaben zum Standort der Gigafactory, jedoch sei zu erwarten, dass die Zahl der neuen Arbeitsplätze für Bau und Betrieb des Werks in die Tausende geht. Die Kooperation werde das Kapital und die Technologie beider Unternehmen nutzen, um neue Wettbewerbsvorteile für GM zu schaffen, sagt Doug Parks, Executive Vice President „Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain“ von General Motors.
