Der US-amerikanische Chemiekonzern Albemarle hat Pläne für die Ansiedlung seiner angekündigten Lithiumhydroxid-Anlage bekanntgegeben. Das Werk soll in Chester County im US-Bundesstaat South Carolina entstehen. Das Unternehmen will mindestens 1,3 Milliarden Dollar in die Anlage investieren, deren Bau voraussichtlich Ende 2024 beginnt.
Lithium aus alten Batteriezellen als Rohstoff
Mit der Benennung „Mega-Flex“ soll die Fähigkeit der Anlage bezeichnet werden, unterschiedliche Lithium-Rohstoffe zu verarbeiten, darunter Lithium aus recycelten Batterien. Albemarle geht davon aus, mit der Anlage jährlich rund 50.000 Tonnen Lithiumhydroxid in Batteriequalität aus diversen Quellen herstellen zu können. Außerdem bestehe das Potenzial für eine Erweiterung auf 100.000 Tonnen. Dieses Produktionsniveau ermögliche die Herstellung von etwa 2,4 Millionen Elektrofahrzeugen pro Jahr. Der geplante Standort für die Anlage ist ein fast 800 Hektar großes Areal. Die finale Zulassung für das Werk steht indes noch aus.
