Das US-amerikanische Recycling-Unternehmen Redwood Materials hat mit der Produktion von recycelten Anodenfolien begonnen. Neben Kupferfolien möchte Redwood auch Kathodenmaterial produzieren. Dies soll laut aktuellem Zeitplan des Konzerns bis 2025 in einem neuen Werk im US-Bundesstaat Kansas geschehen. Für den Bau dieser Fertigung hat Redwood bereits eine bedingte Zusage für ein Darlehen des US-Energieministeriums von umgerechnet 1,9 Milliarden Euro erhalten.

Kathodenmaterialien für 100 Gigawattstunden

Das Unternehmen will eigenen Angaben zufolge ultradünne Kupferfolie und Kathodenmaterialien aus neuen und recycelten Rohstoffen für 100 Gigawattstunden pro Jahr herstellen. Damit sollen jährlich mehr als eine Million Elektrofahrzeuge in den Vereinigten Staaten produziert werden. Das Projekt soll es Batterie- und Automobilherstellern ermöglichen, die neuen strengen Anforderungen an kritische Mineralien und Batteriekomponenten zu erfüllen, damit die Endkunden die Inflation Reduction Act festgelegt Steuergutschriften für Elektrofahrzeuge in Anspruch nehmen können.
