Die US-amerikanische Italvolt-Schwester Statevolt hat im kalifornischen Imperial Valley ein knapp 55 Hektar großes Areal für den Bau einer 54-Gigawattstunden-Batteriefabrik erworben. Bei voller Betriebskapazität soll die Gigafactory eine der größten in Nordamerika sein und Batterien für 650.000 Elektrofahrzeuge pro Jahr produzieren.

Lithium aus dem Salton Sea

Statevolt plane, die Materialien zur Herstellung von Batterien für Elektrofahrzeuge und Speicheranwendungen ausschließlich aus den USA zu beziehen, berichtet das heimische „PV Magazine“. So werde das Unternehmen „Controlled Thermal Resources“ Lithium für die Statevolt-Anlage liefern, die in der Nähe des Salton-Sees entstehe, der zwischen einer Tonne und sechs Tonnen Lithium enthalten soll. Derzeit wird in einem vom „Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory“ geleiteten Forschungsprojekt ermittelt, wie hoch die Lithium-Konzentration im geothermischen Feld unter dem Salton Sea ist und wie sich das Material am umweltfreundlichsten gewinnen lässt.

Unterstützung durch Schweizer Konzern

Seit der Verabschiedung des Inflationsbekämpfungsgesetzes im August 2022 planen Autohersteller und Batterieunternehmen wie Statevolt, insgesamt 54 Milliarden Dollar in 37 spezielle Produktionsanlagen für Elektrofahrzeuge zu investieren. Da Italvolt finanzielle Unterstützung vom Schweizerischen Energie- und Automatisierungstechnik-Konzern ABB erhält, gehen Insider-Kreise davon aus, dass auch Statevolt auf ABB-Hilfe bauen kann.
