PowerCo als neues Batterieunternehmen von Volkswagen und der belgische Materaltechnologie-Konzern Umicore haben ein Joint Venture zur Produktion von Batteriematerialien in Europa ins Leben gerufen. Ab 2025 soll das Gemeinschaftsunternehmen die europäischen Batteriezellfabriken von PowerCo mit Materialien versorgen. Bis 2030 wollen die Partner Kathoden- und Vormaterial für 160 Gigawattstunden Zellkapazität pro Jahr produzieren. Das entspricht einer jährlichen Produktionskapazität, die für rund 2,2 Millionen vollelektrische Fahrzeuge ausreicht.
Kooperation auch bei Rohstoffbeschaffung
Die langfristige Partnerschaft sei vor allem auf die Herstellung von Vor- und Kathodenmaterialien in Europa angelegt, die für die Batterie-Wertschöpfung von zentraler strategischer Bedeutung ist. Im Rahmen zusätzlicher Vereinbarungen wollen Umicore und PowerCo künftig auch bei der nachhaltigen und verantwortungsvollen Beschaffung von Rohstoffen kooperieren. Vor diesem Hintergrund werde Umicore für PowerCo auch Raffinationsdienstleistungen erbringen.
Veredelung und Recycling geplant
Zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt wollen die Partner außerdem Veredelungs- und Recycling-Aktivitäten in das Joint Venture einbringen. Das Gemeinschaftsunternehmen soll 2025 die Produktion aufnehmen und zunächst die PowerCo-Zellfabrik in Salzgitter beliefern, um ab 2026 eine Jahreskapazität von 40 Gigawattstunden zu ermöglichen. Je nach Markt- und Bedarfsentwicklung wollen beide Partner die jährliche Produktionskapazität bis 2030 auf 160 Gigawattstunden erhöhen.
Drei Milliarden Euro für Fertigungsstätten
Gemeinsam sollen drei Milliarden Euro in den Aufbau neuer Produktionskapazitäten für Batteriematerialien investiert werden. Die Partnerschaft soll PowerCo Zugang zu innovativem, nachhaltig beschafftem und maßgeschneidertem Hochleistungsbatteriematerial für die eigene Einheitszellenstrategie in Europa zu wettbewerbsfähigen Preisen gewähren.
