Volvo Trucks plant in der belgischen Stadt Gent die Eröffnung seines ersten Batteriewerks. In der Fabrik sollen von Samsung SDI gelieferte Zellen in Batteriepacks verbaut werden, die dann direkt in Volvos elektrischen Lkw zum Einsatz kommen. Das schwedische Unternehmen rechnet für das dritte Quartal 2022 mit dem Beginn der Serienfertigung.

Standardisierte Packgröße

Jedes Pack soll eine Kapazität von 90 Kilowattstunden aufweisen. Durch die variable Anzahl verbauter Packs sollen sich unterschiedliche Anforderungen bezüglich Reichweite und Anhängelasten der Kunden realisieren lassen. Bei der Maximalauslegung von sechs Batteriepacks ergibt sich damit für einen Lkw eine mögliche Gesamtkapazität von 540 Kilowattstunden.

Elektrifizierung der Industrie

Mit dem Investment untermauert Volvo Trucks eigenen Angaben zufolge seine feste Absicht, die Lastwagenindustrie zu elektrifizieren. Laut „Volvo Trucks“-President Roger Alm möchte der Konzern bis zum Jahr 2030 die Hälfte seiner verkauften Lkw mit einem elektrischen Antrieb ausstatten. 2040 sollen gar keine Verbrennungsmotoren mehr eingesetzt werden.
