Das britische Unternehmen „Green Lithium“ hat Pläne dazu veröffentlicht, die erste Lithium-Raffinerie Großbritanniens in Nordengland zu errichten. Für dieses Vorhaben schloss der Batteriematerialien-Spezialist eine Partnerschaft mit dem Rohstoffhändler Trafigura. Das Unternehmen mit Sitz in Amsterdam hat dazu eine unbekannte Summe in „Green Lithium“ investiert. Daneben wird das Projekt zur heimischen Herstellung von Lithiumhydroxid in Batteriequalität seitens der britischen Regierung mit 631.000 Pfund – umgerechnet knapp 739.000 Euro – gefördert.

Fabrikbau 2023, Produktionsstart 2024

Der Bau der Fabrik soll im kommenden Jahr beginnen. Bis zum Anlauf der Produktion 2024 soll die erste Ausbaustufe fertiggestellt sein. 2026 soll das Werk seine volle Kapazität erreichen und jährlich 50.000 Tonnen Lithiumprodukte in Batteriequalität für europäische Elektrofahrzeug- und Batterieproduzenten herstellen. Der genaue Standort wurde noch nicht bekanntgegeben.
