Das Unternehmen Glencore und der Zellhersteller Britishvolt haben ein Joint Venture zum Recycling von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien gegründet. Gemeinsam sei eine Anlage in Planung, die ab Mitte 2023 jährlich mindestens 10.000 Tonnen Batteriepacks aus Elektrofahrzeugen sowie die Produktionsabfälle der Zellfabrik aus Blyth verwerten soll. Die Recycling-Anlage soll im englischen Northfleet auf dem Gelände des Glencore-Unternehmens „Britannia Refined Metals“ errichtet werden.

Anspruch: Ein weltweit führendes Ökosystem

Die an der Themse gelegene Fabrik soll vorerst die mechanische Zerkleinerung und das hydrometallurigische Verfahren zur Herstellung der schwarzen Masse umsetzen. Die Entwicklung zur weiteren Veredelung der schwarzen Masse zu Rohstoffen in Batteriequalität sei Gegenstand der Partnerschaft. Ziel der Kooperation sei der Aufbau eines weltweit führenden Ökosystems für Batterie-Recycling im Vereinigten Königreich. Langfristig soll die Anlage mit 100 Prozent erneuerbarer Energie betrieben werden. Die Materialien sollen direkt in die Lieferkette zurückfließen.
