Der Batteriehersteller Britishvolt und das „UK Battery Industrialisation Centre“ (UKBIC) haben einen zweijährigen Vertrag über mehrere Millionen Pfund abgeschlossen. Darin ist geregelt, dass Britishvolt Musterzellen der nächsten Generation entwickeln und in Serie produzieren soll. Die ersten Forschungsziele forcieren neuartige Zellen mit hohem Nickelgehalt und erhöhter Energiedichte, um Batterien mit größerer Leistung und Reichweite herstellen zu können.

Etablierung einer britischen Batterieindustrie

UKBIC mit Sitz im britischen Coventry ist eine Forschungs- und Entwicklungseinrichtung für die Herstellung von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien. Die Institution konzentriert sich auf die Skalierung der Zellproduktion sowie die Weiterbildungsmöglichkeiten für Hersteller und Unternehmer im Batteriesektor. Ziel von UKBIC ist die Etablierung einer britischen Batterieindustrie und die Unterstützung der Automobilhersteller bei der Elektrifizierung der Modellvarianten.

Technische Erwartungen weit übertroffen

Ende 2021 wurden bei UKBIC Batteriezellen zu Entwicklungszwecken produziert, die laut der Einrichtung und Britishvolt die technischen Erwartungen weit übertroffen haben. Die Zellen würden zudem bereits einen hohen technischen Reifegrad aufweisen. Die beiden Partner erhoffen sich eigenen Angaben zufolge eine vielversprechende Batteriezelle in die Massenproduktion zu bringen. Britishvolt errichtet derzeit im nordenglischen Northumberland eine Gigafabrik, die demnächst mit einer jährlichen Gesamtkapazität von bis zu 30 Gigawattstunden Batteriezellen produzieren soll.
