Samsung SDI hat mit der Pilotproduktion von zylindrischen Batteriezellen der nächsten Generation für Elektrofahrzeuge begonnen. Aus Expertenkreisen heißt es, dass der südkoreanische Batterieproduzent seine internationalen Standorte ausbauen werde, sobald die Pilotproduktion Serienreife aufweist. Samsung SDI könne durch steigende Energiedichten und eine verbesserte Produktivität im Bereich der Rundzellen seine Position im Batteriegeschäft festigen.

Höhere Kapazität und geringere Kosten

Vor kurzem hatte das Unternehmen in seinem Werk im koreanischen Cheonan eine Pilotproduktionslinie für zylindrische Batterien fertiggestellt. Die neue Batterie soll der 4680-Batterie von Tesla ähneln. Die Abmessungen sollen jedoch variieren und 80 Millimeter in der Länge sowie 40 Millimeter im Durchmesser betragen. Die Festlegung der genauen Samsung-Batterie-Spezifikationen befinde sich derzeit in der Endphase. Im Vergleich zu den aktuellen 21700-Zellen sei die Energiedichte der neuen Rundzelle höher, während die Anzahl der Zellen reduziert werde. Aktuell arbeite Samsung SDI an der endgültigen Standardisierung zur Optimierung des Wärmemanagements und der Energieeffizienz. Neben der Energiedichte werde aufgrund der des größeren Volumens auch die Kapazität der Batterie steigen. Dies ermögliche letztlich die Senkung der Herstellungskosten pro Wattstunde.

Sandortausbau in Ungarn und Malaysia

Sobald Samsung die Entwicklung der neuen Zellen abgeschlossen habe, werde der Batterieproduzent seine Werke in Malaysia und in Ungarn ausbauen und mit der Massenproduktion der neuen Zellengeneration beginnen. Samsung SDI könnte dann Tesla mit Batteriezellen beliefern, da sich die Massenproduktion der 4680-Zellen des E-Mobilbauers voraussichtlich verzögert. Neben Tesla könnte Samsung auch den US-amerikanischen Elektrofahrzeughersteller Lucid Motors mit den neuen Batteriezellen beliefern. Lucid und Samsung hatten im Februar 2021 einen Vertrag zur Lieferung zylindrischer Batteriezellen unterzeichnet. Ob es sich dabei um die neue Zellengeneration handelt, wurde nicht mitgeteilt.
