Die Vulcan Energie GmbH (VE) hat fünf neue Lizenzen für die Förderung von Lithium im Oberrheingraben erworben. Die deutsche Tochtergesellschaft des australischen Unternehmens Vulcan Energy Resources erhielt dabei eine Erlaubnis zur Gewinnung von Erdwärme sowie vier Explorationslizenzen für geothermische Energie und Lithium, das für die Batterie-Industrie essenziell ist.
90 Prozent Lithium aus Thermalwasser
Vulcan Energie plant seit einiger Zeit, im Oberrheingraben Lithium aus Thermalwasser auf CO2-neutrale Weise zu extrahieren. Dabei soll das heiße Wasser zunächst aus tiefen Erdschichten an die Oberfläche gepumpt werden, um Strom zu erzeugen. In einem weiteren Schritt werde das Lithium aus der Sole herausgefiltert. Die für den Prozess benötigte Energie lasse sich der Geothermie entnehmen: Vulcan Energie strebe an, rund 90 Prozent des Lithiums aus dem Thermalwasser herauszufiltern. Anschließend werde das Wasser wieder in die Tiefe geleitet. Ende 2021 hatte VE bereits ein Geothermiekraftwerk der Pfalzwerke erworben, um eine Pilotanlage zur Lithiumförderung zu errichten.
Schon zahlreiche Großkunden
VE-Geschäftsführer Horst Kreuter zufolge sollen die abgedeckten Produktionskapazitäten ergänzt und zeitnah ausgebaut werden. Das Lithium-Start-up-Unternehmen bereits einige Großkunden für das Projekt gewonnen. So habe Vulcan Energie mit dem französischen Automobilhersteller Renault einen Liefervertrag unterzeichnet, der ab 2026 eine Lithium-Lieferung von 26.000 bis 32.000 Tonnen Lithium garantiere. Auch Fahrzeughersteller wie Volkswagen und Stellantis sowie der Recycling-Konzern Umicore und der Batterieproduzent LG Chem zählen zu den Kunden von Vulcan Energie.
