Das Marktforschungsunternehmen Benchmark Mineral Intelligence hat untersucht, inwiefern mit Blick auf die vor Kurzem abgeschlossene Klimakonferenz von Glasgow die Mobilitätsziele umsetzbar sind. Die Analyse kommt zu dem Ergebnis, dass bei dem zu erwartenden Anstieg der Zahl batterieelektrischer Fahrzeuge mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit ein Ressourcenengpass auftritt.

Batteriebedarf von 8.400 Gigawattstunden
Das Marktforschungsunternehmen schätzt den Bedarf an Lithium-Ionen-Batterien auf fast 8.400 Gigawattstunden, falls sämtliche im Jahr 2040 verkauften Autos und Lieferwagen elektrisch betrieben würden. Zu diesem Ziel hatten sich in Glasgow bereits die Automobilhersteller General Motors, Volvo, Ford und Mercedes-Benz bekannt: Sie wollen demnach bereits bis 2035 in allen führenden Märkten emissionsfreie Produkte anbieten.

19-mal mehr Nickelsulfat als 2021 benötigt
Um die in der COP26-Erklärung von Glasgow festgelegten Meilensteine bis 2040 zu erreichen, wären laut der Prognose von Benchmark Mineral Intelligence jährlich mehr als sieben Millionen Tonnen Lithium (LCE) erforderlich. Das wäre 17-mal mehr als die Produktion im Jahr 2021. Ebenso würden über fünf Millionen Tonnen Nickelsulfat benötigt, was laut der Vorhersage des Marktforschungsunternehmens 19-mal mehr wäre als in der aktuellen Produktion.

Lithium-Nachfrage deutlich höher als Angebot
Zur Schließung des drohenden Defizits in der Rohstoffversorgung müssen laut Simon Moores, CEO von Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, die Investitionen in diesem Bereich deutlich gesteigert werden. Die Lithium-Nachfrage wachse derzeit dreimal so schnell wie das Angebot.
