Der Lithium-Produzent Rio Tinto hat in das slowakische Batterie-Unternehmen InoBat investiert. Wie hoch die Beteiligung ist, gab der 1873 gegründete britisch-australische Bergbau-Konzern indes nicht bekannt. Laut einer offiziellen Mitteilung soll die Summe dem Ausbau des Batterie-Ökosystems in Europa sowie der Fertigstellung des Forschungs- und Entwicklungszentrums und der Pilotbatterielinie von InoBat in der Slowakei zugute kommen.
Kooperation vom Rohstoff bis zum Recycling
Die Investition folgt auf eine im vergangenen Mai unterzeichnete Absichtserklärung zwischen Rio Tinto und InoBat für die Zusammenarbeit bei der Schaffung einer Wertschöpfungskette für Elektrofahrzeugbatterien in Serbien. Die Partnerschaft soll den gesamten Lebenszyklus von Rohstoffen bis hin zum Recycling von Lithium abdecken. Im Kern der Kooperation soll die technologische Entwicklung des von Rio Tinto forcierten Jadar-Projekts stehen.
2,4 Milliarden Dollar für Vorreiterrolle
Dabei handelt es sich laut dem Bergbaukonzern um eines der größten in der Entwicklung befindlichen Lithium-Projekte auf der „grünen Wiese“. In Jadar, einem südwestlich von Belgrad liegenden Ort, sollen dazu 55.000 Tonnen Lithiumcarbonat gefördert werden. Seien die letzten noch offenstehenden Genehmigungen in Serbien eingeholt, könne das Unternehmen mit Hilfe des Projekts, in das Rio Tinto rund 2,4 Milliarden US-Dollar investieren will, in den nächsten 15 Jahren zum größten Lithium-Produzenten in Europa avancieren.
