General Motors (GM) hat mit dem Bau einer neuen Einrichtung im Bereich der Batterietechnologie begonnen. Das „Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center“ soll ab Mitte 2022 die Entwicklung und Vermarktung von Batterien für Elektrofahrzeuge mit größerer Reichweite und zu günstigeren Preisen beschleunigen. Dem Center komme eine zentrale Rolle in GMs elektrischer Zukunft zu.

Batteriekosten sollen um mindestens 60 Prozent sinken
Die Anlage wurde laut GM so konzipiert, dass sie zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt um mindestens das Dreifache anwachsen kann. Erste prototypische Batteriezellen des Komplexes sollen bereits Ende 2022 produziert werden. Eines der wesentlichsten Ziele der neuen Einrichtung sei es, die Batteriekosten um mindestens 60 Prozent gegenüber heutigen Maßstäben zu reduzieren.

Auch Festkörperbatterie im Fokus
Im „Wallace Battery Cell Innovation Center“ will GM künftig neue Batteriezellen auf Basis von Ansätzen in den Bereichen Lithium-Metall-, Silizium- und Festkörperbatterietechnik weiterentwickeln. Dabei soll das Know-how aus der bereits vorhandenen Partnerschaft mit LG Energy Solution ausgebaut werden. Ein erstes Ziel mit Blick auf die Batteriezellkapazität für spätere Serienanwendungen definiert GM bereits mit Energiedichten von 600 bis 1.200 Wattstunden je Liter.

Materialsynthese-Labor geplant
Neben der reinen Produktion von Batteriezellen will GM sich auch mit der Entwicklung der Batterierohstoffe auseinandersetzen. So soll es am Standort künftig ein Materialsynthese-Labor geben, in dem das Unternehmen seine eigenen Kathoden-Aktivmaterialien herstellt und sie entsprechend verarbeitet.
