Der chinesische Batteriekonzern CATL übernimmt das kanadische Bergbauunternehmen Millennial Lithium. Für die Übernahme des vor allem in Argentinien aktiven Konzerns zahlte CATL 376,8 Millionen kanadische Dollar – umgerechnet rund 254,5 Millionen Euro. Mit der Investition will das Unternehmen eine langfristige Lithium-Versorgung gewährleisten.

Ganfeng Lithium unterliegt im Bieterwettstreit
Laut der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters hatte der chinesische Konkurrent Ganfeng Lithium im vergangenen Juli bereits 3,60 kanadische Dollar pro Aktie geboten und CATL dieses Angebot mit etwa 3,85 Dollar übertroffen. Die Übernahme von Millennial Lithium ist eine von mehreren Beteiligungen, die CATL in den vergangenen Monaten realisierte. Zuletzt erwarb der asiatische Batterieproduzent Anteile an dem ebenfalls kanadischen Unternehmen „Neo Lithium Corp.“ sowie an dem australischen Betrieb „Pilbara Minerals“ und dem grönländischen Konzern „North American Nickel“. Außerdem hatte CATL sich Anteile an der Kisanfu-Mine zur Kobaltförderung in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo von einer CATL-Tochterfirma gesichert.

Harter Konkurrenzkampf um Lithium aus Südamerika
Um die Lithium-Reserven in den südamerikanischen Ländern Bolivien, Argentinien und Chile herrscht ein großer Konkurrenzkampf. 2018 hatte der chinesische Konzern Ganfeng Lithium sämtliche Anteile des chilenischen Lithium-Herstellers SQM an dem argentinischen Förderprojekt Cauchari-Olaroz aufgekauft. Seitdem hält „Lithium Americas Corp“ 62,5 Prozent, während die Chinesen 37,5 Prozent an dem 82.000 Hektar großen Abbaugebiet Cauchari-Olaroz beanspruchen. Laut einem früheren Bericht der Financial Times hatte auch Tesla in Verhandlungen mit SQM gestanden.
