Toyota plant, bis zum Jahr 2030 insgesamt 1,5 Billionen Yen – umgerechnet rund 11,5 Milliarden Euro – in die Entwicklung und Herstellung von Batterien zu investieren. Eigenen Angaben zufolge will der japanische Autohersteller damit eine Vorreiterrolle in der Batterietechnologie einnehmen. Laut Masahiko Maeda, Chief Technology Officer von Toyota, soll die jährliche Produktionskapazität auf mehr als 200 Gigawattstunden steigen. Aktuell beträgt die Kapazität sechs Gigawattstunden pro Jahr.
Kosten und Stromverbrauch: Senkung um ein Drittel
Ziel sei es, die Kosten der Batterien um mindestens 30 Prozent zu senken. Dies wolle Toyota durch Anpassungen der verwendeten Materialien und durch eine verbesserte Aufbauweise der Zellen erreichen. Außerdem erklärte Masahiko Maeda, dass der Stromverbrauch der Fahrzeuge um ebenfalls 30 Prozent verringert werden soll.
Toyota nimmt die Festkörperbatterie in den Blick
Neben der Weiterentwicklung der aktuellen Batteriegeneration strebe Toyota auch die Entwicklung von Festkörperbatterien an. Diese verwenden anstatt eines flüssigen einen festen Elektrolyten. Festkörperbatterien könnten aufgrund der höheren Energiedichte, der höheren Lade- und Entladeraten und der geringen Anfälligkeit für Brände einen Wendenpunkt für die Automobilindustrie darstellen. Trotz der kurzen Lebensdauer der neuartigen Zelltechnologie bleibe es Toyotas Ziel, bis Mitte der 2020er Jahre mit der Herstellung von Festkörperbatterien zu beginnen. Einer Massenproduktion haben bislang nicht nur die hohen Herstellungskosten entgegengestanden, sondern auch eine mögliche Rissentwicklung während des Gebrauchs durch die Ausdehnung und Kontraktion der Zellen.
