Lange Zeit gab es kaum eine Alternative zu Lithium als wichtigem Transportmedium für Ladungen in Batterien. Nun jedoch startet die Natrium-Ionen-Batterie, die bislang hauptsächlich durch Forschungsansätze bekannt ist, in die Serienproduktion in China. Vorangetrieben wurde dies von CATL und Faradion.

Natrium: höhere Verfügbarkeit, Lithium: höhere Energiedichte
Für den Batteriehersteller CATL aus China und den Batterieentwickler Faradion aus Großbritannien wäre es ein erheblicher Durchbruch, wenn die Serienproduktion der Natrium-Ionen-Batterien zu verlässlichen Endprodukten gelänge. Größter Vorteil wäre, dass Natrium deutlich einfacher verfügbar ist als Lithium, was die Batterien um einiges günstiger als konventionelle Lithium-Ionen-Batterien machen würde. Nachteil der Technologie ist jedoch, dass die Zyklenbeständigkeit der Natrium-Ionen-Batterien unterhalb der von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien liegt, während die Energiedichte deutlich geringer ist.

Aktuellen Informationen zufolge ist die noch junge Natrium-Ionen-Technologie vor allem wegen der Kostenvorteile jedoch bereits eine ernsthafte Alternative auf dem Batteriemarkt. So wird berichtet, dass Automobilhersteller – wie schon bei LFP-Batteriezellen im Falle von Tesla – künftig wohl auf hohe Batterieleistungsdaten in Basis-Elektro-Fahrzeug-Segmenten verzichten könnten, wenn dadurch Kosten gespart werden.

Etablierung am Markt noch nicht in Sicht
Trotz des Starts einer ersten Serienproduktion von Natrium-Ionen-Batterien scheint die Marktetablierung derzeit noch in weiterer Ferne zu liegen. Alle in der jüngeren Vergangenheit von namhaften Automobilherstellern angekündigten Batterie-Entwicklungsvorhaben basierten ausschließlich auf Lithium-Ionen-Ansätzen.
