Laut einer aktuellen Meldung des SR fordert der Verband „Autoregion“ das Saarland dazu auf, mehr für das Batterierecycling zu tun. Als künftige Heimat der Batteriezellfertigung des chinesischen Herstellers Svolt solle man im Saarland schon heute die Weichen für effektive Recyclingprozesse stellen.
Daher plädiert der Verband dafür, im gleichen Rahmen wie bei der Batteriefabrik auch eine Recycling-Gesellschaft voranzutreiben, die dortige Entsorger mit Beteiligung des Landes einbindet. Der Verband verweist dabei auf China, wo es bereits seit 2019 entsprechende Richtlinien für Batterierecycling-Anlagen gibt.
„Wenn der Preis steigt, dann lohnen sich Recycling-Prozesse. Fällt der Preis, ist es leider günstiger, das Rohmaterial frisch einzukaufen“, relativiert indes Professor Volker Presser vom Institut für Neue Materialien in Saarbrücken. Das Batterierecycling sei derzeit noch teuer und energieaufwendig.
Lithium-Gewinnung aus dem Rhein
Die hohe Gesamtkomplexität des Batterierecyclings und die damit einhergehende hohe Abhängigkeit von Rohstoffimporten aus weltweit oft auch kritischen Abbaugebieten begünstigt alternative Rohstoffquellen. So bietet etwa Lithium als entscheidendster Rohstoff für Batterien Perspektiven. Schon seit einiger Zeit steht die Gewinnung von Lithium aus dem Rhein im Fokus mehrerer Projekte.
So arbeitet „Vulcan Energy Resources“ beispielsweise gerade daran, Lithium aus einem geologisch aktiven Gebiet im Südwesten Deutschlands zu gewinnen, das das größte Lithium-Reservoir Europas und eines der größten der Welt bildet. Gelingt das Projekt in der weiteren Umsetzung, so könnten zwei Anlagen schon 2024 insgesamt 15.000 Tonnen Lithium-Hydroxid pro Jahr gewinnen. Gemäß Schätzungen von Geologen lässt sich in der Region theoretisch sogar genug Lithium für 400 Millionen Elektroautos gewinnen.
