Nach der Bestätigung von VW, die Festkörperbatterietechnik als finale Ausbaustufe der Lithium-Ionen-Batterie mit Partner QuantumScape auf den Markt bringen zu wollen, hat nun auch BMW die Entwicklung einer Festkörperbatterie angekündigt. Automobiltaugliche Festköper- beziehungsweise Feststoffbatterien sollen schon „deutlich vor 2025“ in Demonstrator-Fahrzeugen erreicht werden.

Zu technischen Details der Festkörperbatterie äußerte sich BMW so, dass das Ziel sei durch die neue Batterieentwicklung bis zum Ende des Jahrzehnts die Energiedichte in Batteriezellen um einen mittleren zweistelligen Prozentbereich zu steigern. Zudem sei der Anspruch, dass die Entwicklung „sicher, kostengünstig und kreislauffähig“ würde. Die Forschung und Validierung bei BMW zur Festköperbatterie sei nach Aussage von BMW eine unter mehreren Entwicklungsrichtungen. BMW betont jedoch mit klarem Bezug zur Festköperbatterie, dass das Unternehmen diese als „Game-Changer im automobilen Anwendungsbereich“ sehen würde.

Hierfür sowie für die gesamten Entwicklungen im Bereich der Batterietechnologie bei BMW, die nach Aussage von BMW auch den Hochlauf einer europäischen Zell- und Batterie-Wertschöpfungskette unterstützen, erhielt BMW einen Zuwendungsbescheid vom Bundesminister für Wirtschaft und Energie, Peter Altmaier, sowie vom Bayerischen Staatsminister für Wirtschaft, Landesentwicklung und Energie, Hubert Aiwanger im Rahmen der IPCEI Förderung.
