Der spanische Autobauer SEAT, ein Unternehmen des VW-Konzerns, hat, nach seit einigen Wochen vorhandenen Gerüchten, bestätigt ein Batteriewerk nahe Barcelona bauen zu wollen. Als Voraussetzung hierfür besteht SEAT jedoch auf die versprochene Förderung des Projektes aus Spanien und der EU. Das Batteriewerk selbst soll künftig in erster Linie eine benachbarte BEV-Fahrzeugproduktion des Unternehmens unterstützen.

Bestätigt wurde das vorhaben vom SEAT CEO, Wayne Griffiths, im Rahmen einer Ankündigung zu SEATs neue geplanten batterieelektrischen Stadtfahrzeug, dass ab 2025 auf dem Markt kommen soll. Griffiths betont, dass wenn insbesondere auch der spanische Staat und die EU ein Interesse am Zukunftsvorhaben von SEAT hätten, diese ihre Unterstützung möglichst zeitnah auch offiziell festhalten sollten. Erfolge die Unterstützung spät oder gar nicht, dann sei der Produktionsstart für 2025, mit einer jährlichen Produktionsmenge von 500.000 Fahrzeugen, wohl nicht zu halten.

In Bezug auf die technische Auslegung des möglichen Batteriewerks sagt Griffiths weiter, dass für SEAT nicht die Batteriezellproduktion, sondern die Batteriesystemfertigung von entscheidender Bedeutung ist. Es sei für die elektrische Fahrzeugproduktion im Umkreis von Barcelona erheblich wichtiger, dass das Batteriepack vor Ort gebaut wird, während es weniger relevant wäre woher die Zellen für die Batteriesysteme kämen.
