Wie einer aktuellen Recherche der Wirtschafts Woche zu entnehmen ist, plant Varta den lange schon erwarteten Einstieg in die Produktion von Elektroautobatterien. Geplant sei, mit einer Produktion von 21700 Batterierundzellen zu starten, die in leistungsstarken Elektrofahrzeugen zum Einsatz kommen sollen. Varta, dass noch keine genaueren Details zum Projekt bekannt gab, hat die Ambitionen grundlegend bestätigt.
Quelle der Informationen seien konzernnahe Kreise des Unternehmens gewesen, die berichtet hatten, dass Varta in Diskussionen mit Autobauern zu den Batteriezellen stünde. Die Massenmarkt Produktion von Batteriezellen für Fahrzeuge ist dabei für Varta, dass bisher vor allem in der Forschung zur Lithium-Ionen-Batterie aktiv war, Neuland. Aktuell produziert das Unternehmen im Bereich der Lithium-Ionen-Batterien in erster Linie Knopfzellen auf höchstem Niveau, welche zum Beispiel Apple in seinen AirPods verwendet. Relativ klar schien jedoch, nachdem Varta im vergangenen Jahr eine Förderung von 300 Millionen Euro vom BMWi für den Ausbau der Batterieproduktionsleistung erhalten hatte, dass hiermit auch der Ausbau von Fahrzeugbatterien gefördert werden solle, die Zukunft des Unternehmens auch bei Fahrzeugbatterien liegen würde. Diese Entwicklung scheint nun konkret zu werden.
Überraschend wäre jedoch das 21700-Zellformat. Den in Bezug auf die Zukunftsfähigkeit scheint dieses Format inzwischen überholt zu sein. Schon im letzten Jahr stellte Tesla auf seinem Battery-Day die Zukunft der Rundzelle in Form des optimierten 4670-Zellformates vor und zeigte die Vorteile gegenüber der 21700-Zelle auf. Dieser Fakt bewegte auch LG Energy Solutions unlängst eine prototypische Produktion dieses Zellformates aufzubauen, um damit Tesla potentiell beliefern zu können. Die Frage ist also, ob das 21700 Format überhaupt eine Zelle mit Zukunft ist?
Um schlussendlich genaue Erkenntnisse über die Traktionsbatteriezellproduktion von Varta zu gewinnen, wird eine Pressmitteilung des Unternehmens mit Details zum Zellformat abzuwarten bleiben.
