In Sorge über die wachsende Dominanz chinesischer Unternehmen auf dem Weltmarkt der batterieelektrischen Mobilität und um die eigene Zukunft des Mobilitätssektors zu schützen, hat die US-amerikanische Regierung Gespräche mit Canada Nickel geführt. Nickel ist aktuell einer der Schlüsselrohstoffe um leistungsfähige Batteriezellen zu produzieren.
„Es ist sehr deutlich geworden, dass es große Teile des Periodensystems gibt, für die die Vereinigten Staaten keine lokale Bezugsquelle haben“, sagte Mark Selby, Geschäftsführer von Canada Nickel, in einem Interview. Er bestätigt somit, dass Canada Nickel in Gesprächen mit der US-Regierung steht, gab jedoch keine Informationen im Detail.
Nach aktueller Schätzung wird Canada Nickel erst zur Mitte des Jahrzehnts den Betrieb aufnehmen. Dabei sollen die Kosten für die Erschließung der kanadischen Nickelvorkommen und deren Verarbeitung zum Rohstoff der Batterieproduktion ein Gesamtprojektbudget von $1 Milliarden bis zum Jahr 2023 umfassen.
US-Präsident Joe Biden betonte erst unlängst ein künftig noch stärker werdendes wirtschaftliches Tauziehen mit China, während er selbst insbesondere ein Führsprecher der erneuerbaren Energie ist. Daher stünden Kanadas Premierminister Justin Trudeau und Joe Biden, nach Informationen von Reuters, aktuell im Austausch zu einer größeren Zusammenarbeit im Rahmen der Rohstoffkooperation beider Länder.
