Nissan, dass im englischen Sunderland sein EV Nissan Leaf produziert, plant künftig noch mehr Batteriezellen aus Großbritannien zu beziehen. Die Entscheidung steht im engen Zusammenhang mit den seit dem 1. Januar geltenden neuen Zollbestimmungen, die es für Nissan attraktiv machen mehr EVs im bestehenden britischen Werk mit ebenso britischen Batterien zu produzieren.
Während bisher vor allem die inzwischen etwas veraltete 40 kWh Batterie lokal bezogen wurde, kam das stärkere Batteriesystem, die 62 kWh Batterie, für die neusten Leaf Modelle aus den USA. Das soll sich nun ändern, denn Nissan COO/CPO Ashwani Gupta plant, auch die stärkeren Batterien künftig aus England zu beziehen. Gupta offenbart dies im Interview mit Reuters und sagt, dass der Vorgang, die englische Batterieproduktion auf die neuen Systeme vorzubereiten, noch einige Monate dauern würde.
Mit dem Modell Leaf gehört Nissan zu den Pionieren der Elektromobilität und hat bereits früh ein, heute dem chinesischen Investor Envision gehörendes, Batteriewerk in Sunderland gebaut. Durch dieses immer noch eng mit Nissan kooperierende Werk und die seit 1986 von Nissan in Sunderland betriebene größte britische Fahrzeugproduktion, ist Nissan gut in Großbritannien aufgestellt. Hierdurch stellt sich nach der Aussage von Herrn Gupta der Brexit nicht, wie zuerst erwartet, als Gefahr für Nissan heraus, sondern sei mehr eine Chance.
