Der chinesische Batteriehersteller SVOLT, der seit Ende letzten Jahres auch eine Batteriezellfertigung in Deutschland angekündigt hat, will ab sofort seine ersten komplett kobaltfreien Lithium-Ionen-Batteriezellen in den Handel bringen. Die entsprechenden NMX-Zellen sollen in zwei Größen auf den Markt kommen und eine Leistung von 115Ah bei 245 Wh/kg und 226Ah bei 240 Wh/kg enthalten.

Im Gegensatz zu den meisten aktuell auf den Markt erhältlichen kobaltfreien Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, die im Wesentlichen auf einer LFP-Zellchemie basieren, arbeitet SVOLT bei seinem Ansatz mit einem Mix aus Nickel und Mangan auf der Seite der Batteriekathode. Innerhalb der Aufteilung der Kathodenelemente gibt SVOLT an, dass die Zellen insbesondere durch einen verhältnismäßig hohen Mangananteil von 25%, bei 75% Nickelanteil, Kosten im Vergleich zu modernen NMC-Zellen einsparen würden. Negativ bleibt jedoch bei den NMX-Zellen, ebenso wie bei den LFP-Zellen, dass beide den NMC-Zellen in Bezug auf die Energiedichte unterlegen sind.

Obwohl die Zellen bestellbar sind, ist die Produktion aktuell noch nicht angelaufen. Entstehen sollen die ersten Zellen des neuartigen Zelltyps jedoch dieses Jahr schon im Werk Jintan in China und ab 2023 dann auch im neuen deutschen Standort in Überherrn im Saarland. In Bezug auf die potentiellen Abnehmer der neuen Zellen verkündet SVOLT in seiner Pressemitteilung dabei selbst, dass die Zellen der Leistungsklasse 115 Ah mit einem Format von (33,4 x 220 x 102,5 mm) passend für die MEB-Plattform wären.
