Der seit diesem Jahr größte Hersteller für Lithium-Ionen-Batteriezellen LG Chem wird künftig neue NCMA-Batterien an Tesla liefern. Konkret wird Tesla erster Kunde der dann abgespaltenen LG Chem Tochter, LG Energy Solutions, werden, dessen Gründung LG Chem in diesem Jahr erklärt hatte. Die neuen Batterien von LG Energy Solutions bestehen zu 90% aus Nickel.

Tesla sichert sich so beim Marktführer die nächste Entwicklungsstufe der aktuellen Lithium-Ionen-Batterie Art, in deren Zellchemie neben einem hohen Nickelanteil dann auch Kobalt, Mangan und neu Aluminium vorliegen werden. Nach aktuellen Informationen soll die Technologie bis zur zweiten Jahreshälfte verfügbar sein. Aktuelle Gerüchte gehen davon aus, dass Tesla die Zelltechnik wohl zuerst im Model Y etablieren könnte.

Die neue Batterietechnik bietet sowohl leistungstechnische als auch Ressourcen-Einsatz optimierende Vorteile. Insbesondere der Hohe Nickelanteil trage dazu bei, dass die Energiedichte der Batteriezellen in einer baugleichen Teslabatterie dazu beitragen würde, dass diese statt 500 km so 600 km Reichweite bieten würde. Die Reduzierung des kritischen Grundelements Kobalt in der Batteriezellchemie auf unter 5% trägt weiterhin dazu bei, dass zum einen die Kosten gesenkt und zum anderen in Verruf stehende Ressourcenströme des Kobalts immer mehr reduziert werden können. Auch Samsung und SK Innovation treiben vergleichbare Ansätze voran, in denen vor allem auch das Kobalt in Batteriezellen reduziert werden soll. LG Chem verweißt jedoch in Anlehnung auf die Untersuchungen von Professor Sun Yang-kook von der Hanyang University darauf, dass die eigene Technik sich als die in Bezug auf Kapazität, Batterielebensdauer und Widerstandsfähigkeit aktuell beste präsentiert hätte.
